🌿 Your skin never sleeps. What are you making it wear?

La tua pelle non dorme mai. E tu cosa le fai indossare? Donna con canottiera che si tocca la pelle.

Synthetic fabrics, endocrine disruptors, and why what you wear matters far more than you think — 24 hours a day.

There is one organ in your body that works without pause, day and night, awake and asleep. It’s not the heart. It’s not the brain.

It’s the skin.

And it is the only organ that — for your entire life — stays in direct contact with what you choose to wear. Twenty‑four hours a day. Your daytime clothes, your nightwear, your bedsheets, your underwear. A continuous, intimate, silent contact.

And yet almost no one asks what is happening in that thin boundary between fabric and body.

This article is for those who want to know.

🧬 The skin is not an impermeable barrier

The first misunderstanding to clear up is this: the skin is not a wall. It is a semipermeable membrane, a living organ that breathes, absorbs, regulates temperature, and communicates with the immune system.

Its surface measures about 1.7–2 square meters in adults. It is the largest organ of the human body and one of the most vascularized. In some areas it contains up to 700 sweat glands per square centimeter and thousands of nerve endings.

All of this means something very simple: whatever touches the skin, the skin perceives it.

“The skin is not a passive barrier, but an active immunological organ constantly interacting with the external environment.”

British Journal of Dermatology, 2022

🧪 The issue is not just the synthetic fiber

Polyester, nylon, acrylic — as pure polymers — are not classified as toxic in themselves. The critical point concerns the chemical substances used in finishing processes.

Flame retardants. Stain‑resistant agents. UV stabilizers. Dyes containing heavy metals. Plasticizers.

This is where scientific research focuses its attention, because many of these substances fall into the category of endocrine disruptors.

⚖️ What endocrine disruptors are

According to the World Health Organization, an endocrine disruptor is an external substance capable of altering the functioning of the hormonal system.

It can do so by mimicking a hormone, blocking its receptor or modifying its production and metabolism.

The endocrine system regulates fertility, metabolism, thyroid function, pubertal development, sleep, mood and immune response. Altering its balance means interfering with fundamental life functions.

💡 Relevant data

The ESTEBAN study (Santé Publique France, 2019) detected the simultaneous presence of multiple endocrine disruptors in the general population, with higher concentrations in children.

🧒 Why children are more vulnerable

Children’s skin is thinner and more permeable. The stratum corneum is less developed than in adults.

Moreover, the endocrine system in children is still being built. Interference during this phase can modify the trajectory of development, not just the present.

The main sensitive systems identified by the Italian National Institute of Health include thyroid function, pubertal development and the neurological system.

🧫 The cocktail effect

Each substance may fall within legal limits individually. The problem is that real‑world exposure never occurs to a single molecule at a time.

The cocktail effect describes exactly this: the simultaneous interaction of multiple substances, each below the permitted threshold, but potentially active in combination with the others.

Modern toxicology considers this one of the most complex challenges in contemporary chemical regulation.

🇪🇺 What European regulations say

The REACH Regulation governs chemical substances in the European Union and includes the SVHC list (Substances of Very High Concern).

However, the unambiguous identification of endocrine disruptors is still evolving. In addition, controls on products imported from non‑EU countries can be inconsistent.

The European Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability launched in 2020 aims to strengthen protections, but legislative timelines are inevitably slow.

🔎 Certifications: the concrete difference

In this context, independent certifications become a practical tool for protection.

OEKO‑TEX® Standard 100 certifies the absence of over 100 harmful substances in the finished product.

GOTS certifies the entire supply chain, ensuring that no toxic substances were used in the production phases.

The difference is not aesthetic. It is chemical.

“Preventing exposure to endocrine disruptors is a public health priority.”

— WHO, State of the Science of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals

🌾 Certified natural fibers: what changes for the skin

Safety depends not only on the fiber, but on the certified process.

GOTS organic cotton is breathable and hypoallergenic. Certified European linen is thermoregulating. Tencel/Lyocell has a smooth surface that reduces skin friction. RWS merino wool naturally regulates temperature. Natural silk is structurally similar to skin keratin.

🤍 Why at Malìa Lab we choose only certified natural fibers

Our choice is not only environmental. It is physiological.

A fabric produced without toxic substances does not transfer them to the skin. Every garment is made to measure, at the moment of order. No overproduction, no stock, no unnecessary preservative treatments.

It is not a luxury. It is respect.

✨ What you can do, concretely

  • Read labels: stain‑resistant, flame‑retardant, permanent anti‑odor are indicators of chemical treatments.
  • Look for verifiable certifications.
  • Prioritize certified fabrics for children and underwear.
  • Evaluate cost per use, not just the initial price.

A final note

This article is not meant to create alarm, but awareness.

The body sends signals. Choosing what to wear is one of the most everyday — and most underestimated — acts of self‑care.
