Flavia, the creator of Malia labs, has been a critical part of my personal growth journey as I reconnect with my femininity, inner and outer health, highest wisdom and values, and creativity; a part of that process has been becoming aware of what I put on my body every day with my wardrobe and how it affects me. Her clothing and brand embodies all of these things and more. Open alarm.
A few years ago, I began looking into the clothing industry and my own closet, which is filled with polyester and other plastic and synthetic fabrics; those fabrics, while convenient, may have negative impacts on our body's thermoregulation, health, and fertility, not to mention the way they affect the environment and our health via microplastic/plastic exposure. I started with brands in the United States for undergarments who do organic cotton (PACT, Organic Basics, Subset, some items from Felina) to replace all of the fabrics closest to our most vulnerable skin, but was having trouble finding a brand who did outerwear exclusively in natural fibers, who also fit with my aesthetic.
I value romance, beauty, softness (physical pleasure from soft things, but also kindness and gentleness and truth in a world that may encourage us to be hard or inauthentic sometimes), and ethics, and for me, clothing has always helped me express my creativity and set the tone for my day, and I am very sensitive to uncomfortable fabrics or tags. Additionally, I have always admired the style and classic beauty of Italian women when it comes to their style. Malia labs came up in my research as a highly ethical Italian brand, that values sustainability for the environment, and women's health, by only using natural fibers such as cotton, linen, wool, silk, copper, and hemp; Flavia also uses some semi-syntheric fibers (rayon- from bamboo; tencel/lyocell- eucalyptus wood pulp; seacell- from algae; ecoviscose-from vegetable/wood fibers), but all are from natural fiber sources instead of plastic, and she gets her fabrics from trusted merchants who process everything in a closed loop system (meaning chemicals and dyes used are maintained in the factory in a closed loop and not dumped into the land or water) which minimizes any toxic exposure for the environment, and the clothing itself is free from a lot of the harsher chemicals and plastics, that many mass producers use for convenience but may not be great for our skin. How do I know all of this? Malia spent hours with me over WhatsApp, answering all my questions with grace, kindness, and honest communication. Once I was ready to place my order, she continued to work closely with me to make sure she had all my measurements exactly right (utilizing video instructions from her, and me sending videos of self measuring to ensure accurarcy).
And lastly, when I recieved the clothes... words cannot explain. When I put on Malia's handmade clothing, it feels like being hugged. The clothing fits perfect as it is made to measure just for me. And the fabric, fit, and style, suits me so well, I feel so CARED for, so loved, and can feel the quality and labor in each stitch. For me, replacing my wardrobe with many of Malia's items, has become a way for me to also express self love, since natural fibers made ethically by real humans who were paid for their crastmanship and valued for their time and art, and beautiful clothing that is soft and kind to my skin, brings out my best self. As someone who also works to serve others and bring out their best selves in my career, it feels good to pay an amazing person who also serves others to bring out their best selves, for her career.
My husband is able to tell when I am wearing a Malia item because of how gorgeous it looks on me (I wear the items to work, on dates or time with friends and family, and even to cocktail or fancier events) and how confident I feel in it. I have medium brown skin (dark autumn in color palatte for ideal clothes) and wanted to try a variety of fabrics and items.
My favorites items so far have been the Charlize tube dress in black cotton (which I have work to two formal cocktail/dinner events), the Clara dress in gold (copper lyocell/seacell), the ines black top (in lyocell/seacell) especially paired with the gaby pants in navy (tencel), the Serena dress in antique pink (tencel) is particularly stunning as well and can dress up or down. I also wore the Gonna praga skirt and Bolero Doris suit jacket (organic hemp/cotton and wool) with my crossed ilenia top in chocolate brown (lyocell/seacell) to a conference where I presented and recieved so many compliments.
Thank you, Flavia, for making Malia labs, and for making my life better. 💛🩷🧡
